Floggers 101 – Leather

This is the first in a series of post to help you pick out the perfect Flogger for you and your sub.  This post will go over Flogger anatomy and types of leather.

The main parts of a flogger are the handle area, made up of the butt, shaft and neck.  The butt is the end of the handle opposite the falls.  The shaft is the portion of the handle the user holds.  The neck is where the falls connect to the handle.

The business end of floggers are the falls.  Falls can be made from a variety of materials, my material of choice is leather.  The type of leather used for the falls is where the sensation classification starts.  These sensations range from thuddy to stingy, with many factors playing a role in the final sensation. Stiffness/softness of leather and width of the falls are two of the main factors I use to classify my floggers sensation, that being said the following section only takes into account the type of leather and gives a general overview of the sensation you should expect.

*Disclaimer: Everyone is different and experiences sensations differently, what one person experiences as thuddy another may experience as stingy and vise versa.

Types of Leather

Bullhide:  Thick, heavy leather but not very stiff, the higher the weight the thuddier.  Makes a very thuddy sensation.  Great for anyone who likes heavy impact sessions.  **Currently unavailable**

Deer:  Deer skin leather is a luxuriously soft and pliable leather.  Very thin and light weight giving a nice soft thuddy, almost caress like, sensation.  Excellent leather choice for beginners and experienced users.

Cow:  Cow skin leather ranges from luxuriously soft to very stiff and is known for its durability.  Good blend between thuddy and stingy.  Heavier weight and stiffer leather will tend to be on the stingier side while softer hides will be on the thuddy side.  Good for beginners and experienced users.
